How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Website traffic statistics

We use Independent Analytics to understand how our website is used and improve its content and usability. The statistics include visits and page views, pages viewed, referring websites, approximate geographic location, and browser and device categories.

Independent Analytics does not use visitor-tracking cookies. It processes your IP address to estimate location and combines it with browser information and a secret value to create a hashed visitor identifier. The analytics database stores this identifier rather than your full IP address. We reset the secret value daily to limit recognition of returning visitors across days. This does not mean that the underlying records are necessarily anonymous.

Analytics records are stored locally in our WordPress database with our website hosting provider. We do not send these visitor statistics to Google Analytics or Cloudflare Web Analytics, or use them for advertising profiles or tracking across unrelated websites. We configure automatic deletion of analytics records after 12 months (the plugin’s one-year retention setting). Copies in website backups may remain until those backups expire under our separate backup-retention arrangements.

We exclude visits made while signed in to our website, including administrator visits. Daily visitor identification means the same person returning on several days may be counted more than once in weekly or monthly visitor totals. Statistics include only eligible visits for which analytics consent has been given.

We process optional analytics on the basis of your consent. Analytics remains off until you choose Accept in our consent control. You can choose Reject without affecting access to our website, or change your choice and withdraw consent at any time using the Privacy choices control. Withdrawal stops future analytics collection in that browser and does not affect the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. Our consent controls use necessary preference storage to remember your choice; Independent Analytics itself does not use visitor-tracking cookies.
